Surf and solitude

Waking up to the sound of seabirds crying out high in the sky, you open the windows on another gorgeous, warm sunny day. Before it gets too hot, a gentle stroll past trees laden with lemons and soon you’re feeling the sand oozing between your toes.

If you can resist the pull of the sparking blue sea, there’s time to stop at a bar on your way to the shop for a wake up coffee and a sweet pastry; it’s hard to think of a nicer way to start a day.

Out and about

A short drive to Yialia will take you to this picturesque little village that at one time was totally Turkish Cypriot, past the village and up the hill are the ruins of an old church and down again to Pomos, a little gem hidden among pines in the mountain foothills with a small pebble beach.

West of Polis is the little fishing village of Lachi, where sponge diving continued well after everyone else decided there were easier ways to make a living. There are some good fish restaurants there and a water sport centre.
