You’ll need to report to the local police headquarters (Questura), or in smaller towns, the “Commissariato” within seven days of arriving in Italy. Here you can apply for your residence permit, or “Permesso di Soggiorno”. This will allow you to stay and work for three months, at the end of which you’ll need to apply for an extension.
If you receive a state pension, you should be able to have this paid straight into your Italian bank account, providing you have notifi ed the right people and fi lled in the right forms.
