Healthcare in Italy

A guide to the Italian healthcare system

The Italian national health service is run by the “Servizio Sanitario Nazionale “(SSN) - the equivalent to the NHS. It offers low-cost treatment to a high standard, with dedicated doctors and medical professionals at all levels, but waiting lists tend to be long.

Once you have a residence permit and are registered to pay tax in Italy, you will be able to register with a local doctor. Until then, as a member of the EU, you can receive emergency medical treatment on production of your E111 card. Appointment systems are rare so, if you need to visit a doctor, you simply have to wait your turn. Of course, you can also take out private medical cover for absolute peace of mind, and many people choose to do this. Cover is available at reasonable prices and will mean that you won’t fall victim to long waiting lists if you need treatment or surgery.
