
Cyprus is currently rebranding itself as a luxury holiday destination in the wake of the economic downturn, it has been suggested.
Partly due to a reputation for being more expensive than its Greek island counterparts, holidays in the country have reduced during the last 12 months as the recession takes hold in the UK.
However, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has shifted the emphasis of its strategy to attract the higher end of the luxury holiday market.
"Cyprus has long realised that attracting more affluent travellers, who place importance on quality of product rather than price, is key to bumping up numbers," states Travel Weekly.
Photis Lambrianides, the commercial director of Olympic Holidays, says he expects sales to increase this year.
It recently emerged that Cypriot finance minister Charilaos Stavrakis has already approved 30 loans for first-time buyers as part of a new scheme, which was launched just a few days ago.
