Cyprus tourism industry records growth

Official figures have revealed that visitor numbers in Cyprus have gone up during the last 12 months.

According to data cited by the Financial Mirror, more than 307,000 foreign leisure travellers visited the Mediterranean island last month.

This is 8.8 per cent higher than the amount recorded in June 2007, which saw 282,000 people arrive in the country.

Many of the recent visitors were said to come from the UK, as Britons accounted for more than half of all incoming tourists.

More than 160,000 British nationals arrived in Cyprus last month - 7.7 per cent more than in June 2007.

Figures also showed that the island is also very popular with other nationalities, including people from Russia, Sweden and Germany.

Earlier this week, Cyprus was flagged up as a good place in which to buy a holiday home by Gulf Weekly.

The publication said this is partly because it offers attractions such as long summers and mild winters.
