EHIC 'no substitute for health insurance'
Tuesday October 14th , 2008

UK citizens paying a trip to Europe have been reminded of the need to purchase health insurance.
Shelter Offshore reports that, contrary to many people's belief, possession of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does not entitle the holders to free comprehensive medical treatment.
The card, which replaced the E111 form in January 2006, may provide some protection in the event of sickness or injury within the European Economic Area, but it is no alternative to full medical cover.
Only treatments covered on an individual country's "insured" medical scheme will be provided free of charge to an EHIC holder.
Referring to the case of a UK holidaymaker who received extensive medical care in Ireland and was charged for his repatriation back home, the news provider warns that a failure to take out health insurance can prove an expensive mistake.
Each member of a family group aged over 16 requires an EHIC when travelling abroad, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
