Cypriot tourism committee submits plans to boost industry

The Cyprus Crisis Management Committee on Tourism has announced plans to submit a number of measures to boost the nation's tourism industry to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.

Panos Egglezos, the committee's president, told reporters at a press conference that the world financial crisis will probably affect tourism in the nation during 2009, however measures are planned to combat this.

He added that one issue which needs to be tackled is flight connections between Cyprus and other nations.

Mr Egglezos also noted that financial aid worth 12 million euros (£10.8 million) will be used to produce targeted advertising and promote tourism, reports the nation's Financial Mirror.

"I believe that Cyprus is a very good country for tourism, it offers hospitality, safety, sun, sea, quality. All these can keep Cyprus on the tourist map and we must all work together to succeed in our goals," the newspaper quotes him as saying.

The Aberdeen Press and Journal recently tipped Cyprus as a top destination to buy property, noting that this time of year often sees people considering a move to warmer climes due to the cold days and dark evenings.
