Italian property 'gaining popularity' with overseas buyers

Italy is becoming more popular with people looking to buy property abroad, a recent survey has shown.

The country climbed two places to sixth most popular destination in Property Abroad's latest index, which shows the most-searched for countries on its portal.

According to chief analyst Liam Bailey, the country's success rests on its status as a secure and established market, making it popular with buyers who want to play it safe.

He described the boost as "a noticeable trend", adding that two years ago, countries with high potential gain such as Ukraine and Bulgaria took over in the property race when credit was easy to obtain.

"Now, as consumer confidence drops, established markets like Cyprus, Italy and France are regaining their positions as most popular for overseas property purchasers," he added.

Meanwhile, Italy was ranked the top European destination by Daily Telegraph readers.

The country scooped first place in the newspaper's annual travel awards.
