How To Get Internet Access in Spain
Friday June 8th , 2007
Getting connected to the Internet in Spain isn’t difficult and may even be cheaper and faster than in the UK. Although Spain’s Internet take up lagged behind the rest of Europe initially, it is quickly catching up. Here’s how to connect:
Get broadband
Broadband is one of the fastest ways to access the Internet. It doesn’t tie up your phone line whilst you’re online and, if you use the Internet every day, it’s also the cheapest way to connect.
Broadband is available through your phone line in most urban areas, although as in the UK, you’ll need to double check you can get it. Access is rapidly increasing in rural areas too.
The good news is that the Internet is available at broadband speeds via satellite no matter where you are in Spain. You will need a special satellite dish to access this service, available through your Internet Service Provider, for details see Step 3 below.
Get dial up
If you’re unable to get broadband, or only want occasional Internet access, then you may want to arrange a dial-up Internet connection through your telephone line. You can choose to pay by the minute or pay a fixed monthly fee for unlimited access.
Remember that dial up isn’t as fast to use as broadband and you won’t be able to use your phone when you’re online.
Get an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
ISPs are in tough competition for your business in Spain, which means Internet access is becoming cheaper. We recommend you shop around to find the best deal, but these are some main providers with websites in English:
- Telefonica
- Direct Telecom
- Satellite Internet access is available through Europe Online
