Travellers 'should be wary' of airport exchange

British tourists should be wary of changing currency at airports, an exchange company claims.

Research from FairFX.com suggests that commission fees can rise as high as 15 per cent at some regional airports.

The study also reveals that 44 per cent of people believe that commission fees of zero per cent mean the service is free.

FairFax.com chief executive Stephen Heath says the true value of a currency exchange is found in the rate itself.

He commented: "Twenty five per cent of people get their travel currency at the airport, which our research shows is the worst place you can get your currency because their rates are so poor."

Tourists renting property in Italy and other eurozone countries are advised to shop around before exchanging any cash.

A separate study by M&S Money reveals that just over a third of British travellers take the strength of a country's currency into account before planning an overseas trip.ADNFCR-1210-ID-19114212-ADNFCR
