Bridge plans revived for Italy

Plans to construct a controversial bridge linking mainland Italy with the island of Sicily have been revived by the country's government.

The idea was first proposed in 2001, but was rejected by Italy's former centre-left government a couple of years ago.

However, president Silvio Berlusconi returned to the idea – which would create the longest in the world – when he was re-elected last year.

It is hoped that the bridge – which would cost around £16 million – will boost the economy and create new jobs.

Tourism in Sicily is currently seeing substantial growth, which has been partly attributed to the increasing number of low-cost airlines.

Consequently, there has been a rise in demand for properties in areas such as Taorimina, Catania, Palermo and Mount Etna.

The Daily Mail recently reported that the Italian town of San Pellegrino is hoping to win back tourists with a major revamp.

Property developer the Percassi Group has invested £84 million into the region.
