Britons head to mainland Europe

Traditional European holiday destinations are set to attract lots of British holidaymakers this summer, it has been revealed.

According to Abbey, more than one in four holidaymakers from the UK plan to visit places such as Italy, Spain and Cyprus.

This is despite the fact that the pound has recently slumped to a record low against the single European currency, thereby making trips to eurozone countries more expensive.

However, Abbey revealed that many people have been saving up in order to afford a holiday and relax in the sun.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, commented: "Putting away £137 each month to pay for the average summer holiday is no small task, but there's nothing more satisfying than saving towards a goal."

This comes after a study by ebookers has revealed that nearly two-thirds of British tourists are heading on beach holidays.

Spain was identified as one of the most popular destinations among this group of people.
