Britons 'to go abroad at Christmas'

Investors in popular tourist hotspots could benefit from an increase in the number of people travelling abroad later this year.

Research by Kayak.co.uk found that 75 per cent of people in the UK wanted to leave the British climate behind and visit a sunny location over Christmas.

A beach holiday was cited as the ideal type of getaway by almost two-thirds of respondents to the poll.

This could result in increased rental earnings for owners of buy-to-let properties in major tourist hotspots such as Spain and Italy.

Annie Wilson, business development director at Kayak.co.uk, commented: "The great British summer has been a wash out this year, so who can blame us sun-starved Brits for wanting to escape to sunnier shores?"

This follows earlier comments from the Association of British Travel Agents, which stated that Christmas was one of the busiest periods for the sector.

The organisation stated that sunny countries such as Spain were highly popular at this time of year, along with Italians skiing resorts.
