Italy named best European destination

Italy has been named the best European destination in the Daily Telegraph's annual travel awards.

Voted for by readers, the country was ranked in the top spot for the second year running.

Rome's Hotel Cavalieri was also named the best city hotel, with the newspaper praising its "clever combination of luxurious interiors and innovation".

The hotel has recently been offering its guests running tours around Rome along with the chance to take part in gladiator training schools.

Meanwhile, estate agent Knight Frank has said that focus has shifted away from regions such as Tuscany as buyers turn their attentions to cities like Florence, themovechannel.com reports.

Rupert Fawcett, from the firm, said that buyers no longer wanted to take on renovation projects for run-down properties and were moving towards gated community developments or lock-up-and-leave homes.

Florence is a haven for art-lovers, having been frequently referred to as 'the birthplace of the Renaissance'.

However, those not so interested in culture are likely to enjoy the city's reputation for fine food and leather goods.
