Most popular Italian locations for foreign property buyers revealed

The top locations for foreigners buying property in Italy have been revealed by a survey.

According to the research by Italy magazine, which tracked advertisements placed in the publication, foreign buyers tend to prefer farmhouses or managed apartments in the countryside, along with panoramic townhouses in rural villages.

Tuscany is the most popular location with nearly one-fifth of the total number of adverts, although Abruzzo is gaining in popularity as a new property hotspot with 19.1 per cent of all properties advertised.

Abruzzo is also listed as the third most affordable region with the average price of a property listed in the magazine being 227,174 euros (£200,153).

Basilicata and Calabria take the first and second spots respectively for affordability, while Tuscany and Campania boast the priciest properties.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the upper end of Italy's property market is remaining healthy, despite the economic downturn, it has been claimed.

Casa Travella's Linda Travella, an expert on Italian sales and purchase for 22 years, said this area of property is one of the most "buoyant" in the country.
