The number of people looking to holiday or find property in Spain, Italy and other countries over Easter has surged, according to travel agent figures.
Research by the online travel agent Sunshine suggests that the number of people looking to venture abroad during the Easter break has significantly grown, with turnover up by 110 per cent compared to this time last year.
The firm's holiday sales alone are up by nearly 40 per cent.
Sunshine's managing director Chris Brown said getting away from the UK offers people the chance to overcome work-related stress and fears of the economic downturn.
He added: "It seems Brits are after some escapism and are fed up of hearing about just how bad the current situation is."
Sunshine's figures follow the news this week that Spaniards are being encouraged to become friendlier in a bid to attract more foreign tourists.
International Property Awards in association with Google and Bloomberg Television have awarded MASA Internaitonal the Best Estate Agency in Spain award.
