Bank holiday tourists head to Spain

Many British holidaymakers are set to pack their bags and travel to Spain this weekend, it has been revealed.

According to the Independent, the European country is likely to be the main hotspot for people from the UK over the bank holiday.

The newspaper highlighted Alicante as an especially popular location, along with parts of the Canary Islands.

This was said to be because these areas offer attractions such as "guaranteed" sunshine.

Speaking to the publication, a BAA spokesperson said today will be the busiest day for airports such as Heathrow, which is expected to handle about 187,000 people.

She added that overall, London-based airports including Heathrow and Gatwick are likely to have 1.3 million people passing through its terminals this weekend.

Spain could be a good destination for British tourists who have been financially stretched by the weak pound.

Although the currency is at a record low against the euro, the Post Office has revealed that Spain is currently the cheapest country in the eurozone.
