Britons 'keep taking holidays in Spain'

Traditional European tourism hotspots are still very popular with Britons, industry analysts have stated.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), countries such as Spain are continuing to attract tourists from the UK.

This is despite the pound losing nearly 20 per cent of its value against the single European currency in the last year, and increasing fuel costs across the world.

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for ABTA, said these external problems are being brushed off by financially-stretched consumers.

She commented: "We know from previous recessions that holidays are the last things that people are prepared to give up."

Ms Tuke added that the Spanish market is currently holding up "very well" in the face of global economic problems such as the credit crisis.

Indeed, figures from Mondial Assistance suggest that more than 30 per cent of holidaymakers from the UK will fly to Spain this summer.
