Christmas tourists 'go away every year'

Millions of festive holidaymakers from the UK go abroad each year, according to new research.

A study by Ebookers.com found that 15 per cent of those choosing to spend the holiday season overseas did so every Christmas.

However, 23 per cent of tourists were found to be spending their first Christmas abroad this year.

This could help account for the increase in the overall number of people departing the UK this yuletide.

A surge in Christmas tourism has been widely reported by a number of airports and industry figures, such as the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

According to the organisation, 3.5 million people are set to head overseas before the end of the year in order to enjoy some winter sun.

ABTA added that skiing resorts in countries such as Italy were also proving to be very popular this year.
