Irish spend Christmas abroad

Many Irish people are choosing to spend this year's festive period overseas, according to a holiday company.

Limerick Travel revealed that factors such as a buoyant economy and the availability of cheap flights had prompted a record number to travel abroad for Christmas.

Spain was highlighted as a particularly popular destination among Irish leisure travellers, partly because of its good weather at this time of year.

In addition, many were said to own a second-home in their country that provided an ideal base for their Christmas festivities.

Tony Brazil, director of Limerick Travel, commented: "There are a huge number of people now who own accommodation abroad and are spending the holidays in places like Malaga or wherever."

Speaking to the Limerick Post, he added that the extra flights provided by low-cost carriers were selling well.

This comes after the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that more than 3.5 million people from the UK were set to spend Christmas overseas.
