Romantic Britons favour Spain

Britons who are taking their partners abroad for Valentine's Day this week could do well to go to Barcelona.

The Spanish city was found to be the most romantic city in the world in a poll by Teletext Holidays.

Almost half of respondents picked Barcelona, while nearly one in three people opted for Madrid.

This marked a sharp contrast with a place commonly associated with romance, as Paris was named as the place where couples were most likely to argue.

Marrakesh and Amsterdam were also cited as locations where hostilities could possibly break out.

Matt Cheever, managing director of Teletext Holidays, commented: "The key to a successful romantic trip is preparation - spend time online researching your trip before you go away."

This could help account for Spain's continued popularity as a holiday destination, as official figures recently showed that it attracted more than 16 million British tourists last year.
