Britons opt for Turkish holidays

Turkey is becoming more and more popular with British leisure travellers, a holiday company has revealed

According to online travel agent Lastminute.com, the country has had more bookings than anywhere else in the world.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, managing director John Bevan said this is unusual because Spain is usually most popular place to visit.

He commented: "If you look at bookings and searches, Turkey is our number one destination."

"Amazingly, France has been pushed out of our top ten."

The shift has been largely attributed to the relative value of the pound against the euro, as it is now at an all-time low against the single currency.

As a result, many are choosing to visit destinations with more favourable exchange rates in order to get more for their money.

This comes after the Post Office reported an increase in the number of Britons who are purchasing Turkish currency.

According to the organisation, demand for Turkish lira in March 2008 was 30 per cent up on the same period of 2007.
