Turkey's EU bid backed by Queen
Wednesday May 14th , 2008

The Queen has publicly backed Turkey's intention to bid for membership of the European Union.
Speaking on her first state visit to the country in 36 years, Queen Elizabeth described Turkey as a "confident and dynamic democracy".
She said the possibility of the nation joining the international body has already had a positive impact on its people and improved their lives.
The 82-year-old monarch added that the nation is also strategically very important, as it acts as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
"For us, Turkey is as important now as it has ever been," she stated.
The British government has already expressed its support for the idea, although it has been opposed by EU members including Austria and France.
Turkey's planned bid to become an EU member has already been publicly supported by prime minister Gordon Brown.
Last year, Mr Brown held a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart during which he said he is in favour of the country's accession.
