Turkey tipped as a top holiday destination in 2009

Turkey has been singled out as a top holiday destination this year by a travel expert.

According to Frances Tuke of the Association of British Travel Agents, the country is set to be one of the "big growth areas" in global tourism in 2009.

She explained that Turkey is planning to target the high end of the tourism marketing by investing in new hotels.

Traditionally, the country has been seen as an inexpensive option for holidays, but Ms Tuke said it was now planning to attract wealthy holidaymakers as well as families.

She commented: "Turkey has put a lot of new investment into hotels and five stars.

"What has been quite a good value destination has broadened its value to the high-end market as well."

Meanwhile, more than 26 million tourists visited Turkey in 2008, officials in the country claimed last week,

According the Hurriyet Daily News reports, Ismet Yilmaz, from the Ministry for Culture and Tourism, said that Turkey's income from tourism topped $21 billion (£14.4 billion) last year.
