UK Driving Licenses recognised in Spain once again
Starting Thursday, March 16 2023, British citizens residing in Spain will have their UK driving licenses acknowledged once more. This development comes after the Spanish government approved a new regulation that recognizes UK driving licenses in the country.
The new rule eliminates the need for UK citizens to exchange their licenses for Spanish ones, as well as the requirement to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP). This change brings relief to many UK nationals living in Spain who were previously facing the prospect of having to pass a Spanish driving test to obtain a valid license.
This decision follows a series of negotiations between the UK and Spain, which have been ongoing since the UK’s departure from the European Union. The agreement is a crucial step towards normalizing relations and simplifying the lives of UK citizens residing in Spain.
Despite the new rule, UK citizens living in Spain for more than six months are still required to register as residents in the country. Registering will provide them with a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) card, which serves as a form of identification for foreigners in Spain.
It is important to note that the new regulation only applies to UK citizens residing in Spain.
The recognition of UK driving licenses in Spain is expected to alleviate some of the uncertainties that have affected UK citizens living in Spain since Brexit. As a result, British nationals can now enjoy greater mobility and the freedom to drive without the need for additional licenses or permits.
